This painting is inscribed 'War Fund Feb 1900' and verso Artist's War Fund 1900. The painting is typical of Irving's style and subject and a very good example of his work.

The exhibition took place at the Guild Hall, London in early 1900 to raise funds for injured servicemen involved in the Boer War.

Queen Victoria contributed to the Artists' War Fund by offering for sale two works, one painted by her own hand, and the other by the late Prince Consort.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

William Irving (1866-1943)

Born Ainstable, Cumbria, the son of a farmer, Irving studied at Newcastle School of Art under William Cosens Way. Worked as an illustrator for the Newcastle Weekly Chronicle. Gained a reputation as a portrait painter and was a member of the Bewick Club, Newcastle. Exhibited at the Royal Academy. Perhaps his most famous painting was 'Blaydon Races'.
