The Battle

 

Wonderful watercolour of a sea battle. The British ship to the left firing upon a French ship. A well known Northumbrian artist De Lacy exhibited at the Royal Academy. The design of the French flag depicted in the painting was used between 1590 and 1790.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Charles John De Lacy (c.1860 - 1936)

Born in Sunderland De Lacy is believed to have served in the army and navy before becoming an artist. Exhibited his work widely including the Royal Academy. His work is held at the Imperial War Museum, Whitehaven Museum and National Maritime Museum.
