ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Peter Flanagan (b.1957)

We are delighted to welcome Peter Flanagan onto The Wallington Gallery web site. A popular artist based in Northumberland.

Peter was born in 1957 and spent his first nineteen years living in various outposts of the retreating British Empire with his military family before settling in the Northeast of England in 1978.

After working as a graphic designer for a number of years in Newcastle, Peter studied visual arts at the University of Northumbria, graduating with a BA (Hons) in Creative and Performing Arts in 1984. For the next twenty one years he worked as an artist and part-time lecturer, much of it at Newcastle College, where he ran the HNC course in Fine Art until 2005. He has been a full-time artist since then.

Peter has exhibited widely, with work in many corporate and private collections in Britain and abroad. He is married with five children and lives in Northumberland.

Peter describes his work thus: ‘In my work I try to balance strong draughtsmanship with a wide vocabulary of mark-making, looking for a poetic realism. I usually start a painting from life and then develop the work in the studio where I try to find a more imaginative, intense and distilled interpretation of the subject, to ‘move the senses by an intensification of reality’, as Lucien Freud puts it.’

Peter has work in the collections of Tony and Cherie Blair, Sir Peter Carr, Lord Dearing, Sir John Hall, The Queen Mother, amongst many others.

All paintings shown are available in quality limited edition giclee prints, including marked as sold, unframed 40cm x40cm £160 - 50cm x 50cm £190 please contact the gallery for details.

Peter is also available for portrait commissions - prices range from £990 - £2,900 depending on size. (some examples of his work have been included on this site).
