Hiscox studied art at the academy in Bristol not far from his home in Wootton Gloucestershire. In 1884 he exhibited at the Royal Academy coming to the attention of Queen Victoria, who later purchased several of his works. In the 1880’s he was living in Slough and the main subject of his landscapes were Windsor Castle and its environs. Possibly this was the reason that Queen Victoria’s interest was aroused.
He was particularly interested in capturing the effects of the different lights at dawn and dusk.
