Graham Sutherland (1903-1980)
War artist between 1940 and 1945 Sutherland was notable for glass, fabrics,
prints and portraits, his most famous portrait being that of Winston Churchill
From the 1950s he lived and worked in the South of France. The animal world
now fascinated him as never before. In paint and lithographs he created a whole menagerie of animals and
insects. The sun of the South on his back
his palette blazed with reds, greens and yellows, as in this sizzling image of his imagined grasshopper.
