Donald Ash (1890 -1964)
Durham Cathedral across the Wear

Durham Cathedral with the River Wear in the foreground, another atmospheric and attractive large painting. It is apparent that the painting was re-framed on 21.11.1972 and still bears the framing gallery label of Mawson, Swan Morgan, Newcastle Upon Tyne with that date verso. Donald Ash has an extensive biography in the excellent book, 'The Artists of Northumbria' by Marshall Hall. His work is represented in the collection of the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle Upon Tyne and in many private collections.
