A well known public house of its time. It was situated at 35, Bell Street, North Shields and this name was used from 1881. Now demolished, this painting is a historical record of a well known landmark in North Shields.

Victor Noble Rainbird was born at North Shields and worked in watercolour and oil. He attended Armstrong College which is now Newcastle University and whilst studying he was awarded the Silver Medal as the highest placed student. He also studied at the Royal College of Art. His works were exhibited all over the world and closer to home at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and the Royal Academy and his works can be found in the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle and South Shields Museum and Art gallery. He painted predominantly in the North of England but also travelled abroad.
