Gilroy was born in Newcastle. This oil painting depicting fishermen and women bringing in the catch at Whitby, on the North East coast of England, is a fine example of his work.

John William Gilroy (1868 - 1944)

Gilroy was born in Newcastle and painted in oil and watercolour his subjects being landscapes, marine, portraits and genre. Exhibited at the RA, the Bewick Club, Newcastle and the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle. Lived and worked in Newcastle then Whitley Bay until his death in 1944.
