This wonderful watercolour of a German Four Masted Barque (Windjammer)  was exhibited at the R.I. exhibition of 1985 at the Mall Galleries, London and bears the original exhibition label verso. Launched in 1902 & named after the wife of Prince William of Prussia & affectionately known as `The Duchess` she was one of the fastest Clippers ever built & won the unofficial grain race from Australia to the UK many times. Immortalized in the book by Alan Villiers `Falmouth for orders`: the story of the last grain race from Australia.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Maurice Wilson RI SWLA 1914 –

Maurice Wilson was a student at the Hastings School of Art under Philip Cole then at the Royal Acadamy Schools with Walter Westley Russell, Robert Austin and Malcom Osborne and went on to become a teacher in art himself. He was an illustrator for the Radio Times and produced a number of wildlife books among them Just Monkeys and Birds. Exhibited at the RSMA and Dorset Naturalists' Trust at Dorset County Museum.
