John Nattrass was born in Gateshead in 1949 and, after serving his time on Tyneside, worked as an engineer for 13 years at sea for Shell Oil Company and B.P. which took him all over the world. He retired in 2006 as a Drilling Supervisor to start his own Drilling Consultancy business which he did until 2009 when he again retired from the business.
John has always had a love for sketching but only took up painting in 2003 and is entirely self taught. His main medium is Acrylic and he paints a variety of subjects including dogs and animals and was inspired by the various countries and situations he found himself in during his working life. He has produced a number of wonderful dog paintings on commission. His paintings of people are particularly good and he has an excellent feel for the human form especially in movement. His paintings are bold and combined with his use of vibrant colours are visually striking.
John also carves walking stick handles which are of an extremely high standard. He has now carved a number on commission.
Apart from his carving and painting he owns 2 Harley Davison motor bikes which he has travelled around America on and also attends some European Rallies, he loves to walk with his dog, Lilli who is a constant companion.
