Gordon Beningfield (1936 - 1998)

At the age of 15 Gordon was apprenticed to Faithcraft,  an ecclesiastical art firm in St. Albans, England. He painted in both oil and watercolour and is well known for painting wildlife subjects in the British countryside. Gordon was also talented in producing fine bronzes and glass engravings. He was involved in BBC television programmes involving wildlife. He was commissioned by the GPO in 1981 for a set of stamps depicting British butterflies and in 1985 a set of stamps showing British insects. His many books included Beningfield's Butterflies, 1978; Beningfield's Countryside, 1980; and a pictorial autobiography, Gordon Beningfield The Artist and His Work, 1994.
