Warden Hill, Northumberland

Warden Hill, meaning ‘Look-out Hill’ or Watch Hill, was an Iron Age hillfort above Warden and High Warden, Northumberland. It overlooks the rivers North Tyne and South Tyne and provides all-around panoramic views across the valley. It is believed that the hill was used to give early warnings of marauding Romans, Vikings, and in later historic times, the Scottish. I painted this during my final year of university after walking through the landscape on a visit home.
