James Clark RI ROI NEAC (1858-1943)

James Clark worked with Oils, Watercolour, Pastels and Stained Glass as well as other mediums. He was born in West Hartlepool studying art at the local art school. He lived in Hartlepool and London and also studied at South Kensington where he was awarded a Gold Medal for Watercolour Studies. He worked in the studio of Bonnat in Paris and also at Ecole des Beaux Arts under Gerome.  Exhibited at the Suffolk Street Gallery, London, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, and was elected a member of the New English Art Club. Patronised by the Royal Family he also served as an examiner in art at Cambridge University. More on this artist in The Artists of Northumbria an excellent book by Marshall Hall.
