Michael Ayrton(1921-1975)

Wit, critic, broadcaster, film-maker and author artist, Ayrton was the most
patriotic spokesman of the art movement known as Neo-Romanticism, which grew up in England during the 1930s
and 1940s.From the 1950s onwards he became obsessed with classical Greek art.In his drawings and sculpture
he explored the mind and bodies of the Greek heroes. His final inspiration was Archilochos, the Greek poet,
whose work is passionate, brutal, sophisticated, all of which is reflected inthe etching V Spears, one in the suite of
16 completed in 1975.
The etching here is numbered 64 from the limited edition of 75.
